Bhaja Caves are group of 22 rock cut carved beautiful caves. Located on a hill near Bhaja, Karli near Lonavala in Maharashtra. Represents finest ancient rock cut Buddhist architecture. It is strong believe that these caves are on lies on a major trade route which was ran from Arabian Sea towards the eastern region of India. All the caves were carved at the Hinayana phase. Carbon dating suggest that these caves were carved in 3rd century BC to 2nd Century AD. Buddhist peoples used these caves till 5-6th century AD, they’ve painted some of beautiful Buddha images on the walls of the Chaityagrha. These all caves are located nearby from the famous river Indrayani, which was the source of water at that time.

The main cave features large hall called Chaitya, which was carved for praying. Carbon dating proves that this hall was carved way back in 1st century BC, and probably the largest carved Chaityagrha in India. Measures 148 feet long and has 46 feet in height, which features sculptures of both males, females, as well as sculptures of lions and elephants. When you reach at the last cave you can find water fall during rainy season, which store the water at a small pool which is present at the bottom.
