About Gangotri
The graceful, elegant and humble temple of Gangotri is a crucial part of the holy Chhota Chardham Yatra that takes place annually on the Garhwal hills of Devbhumi Uttarakhand. Placed on an elevation of around 3,100 Metres above sea level this prominent Hindu pilgrim town is surrounded by immense and unmatched natural beauty. Apart from the obvious natural beauty, the overwhelming sense of spirituality and peace makes visiting this pious shrine totally worth it. As the name suggests the presiding deity inside the temple is that of goddess Ganga and is visited by devotees and pilgrims from all over the world.
Located within the scenic district of Uttarkashi, the temple marks the place where goddess Ganga had made her way from the heaven to the earthly realm. To achieve this king Bhagirath had to meditate for long hours and please Lord Shiva to let a stream of Ganga from his matted locks. Hence, River Ganga that flows here is known as Bhagirathi and later on, it goes on to meet Alaknanda River at Devprayag forming the holy River Ganga that goes on to purify the departed souls. Ever since this holy river had made her presence on earth, the people have been offering prayer, and submerging the mortal remains of the departed souls to grant them Moksha or salvation making it one of the Holiest River in India.
Initially the temple building was not made so Amar Singh Thapa decided to preserve this place by creating a temple at this sacred spot.
Later on, after the devastating earthquake during the 18th century, the temple structure was rebuilt by the maharani of Jaipur which now stands tall and graceful. Just like the other temples of Chhota Char Dham Yatra of Uttarakhand including Kedarnath, Badrinath, and Yamunotri, this temple remains open for a limited duration of 6 months. Apart from the spiritual aspect the temple also marks as the starting point for the thrilling and adventure-filled trek and camping expedition to the source of Ganga River which is located 19 kms away from the temple, known as Gaumukh Glacier.
