Located in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, Gangotri is dedicated to River Ganga and is one of the most important and significant holy sites in the Char Dham circuit. Likewise, other religious sites, Gangotri also hold myriads of legends related to its origin. There is interesting mythology stating that to wash away the sins of King Bhagirath and his forefathers, Goddess Ganga transformed herself into a river and started flowing with immense speed. To stop the devastating speed of the river, Lord Shiva gathered Ganga into his matted hair and controlled the irresistible flow of the water stream. Gaumukh (set in huge Gangotri glacier) is believed to be the originating place of River Ganga and so the glacier also holds importance in Hinduism.
Likewise other pilgrimages of the Char Dham circuit, Gangotri is also an annual pilgrimage and is opened for half a year i.e. with the onset of the summer season and gets closed before the winter commences as the region receives a heavy snowfall hence the shrine become inaccessible. Gangotri also serves the base of several trekking trails viz. Bhojwasa, Gangotri Glacier, Tapovan, Shivling Peak, and Gaumukh. There are oodles of sightseeing destinations adorning the region Pandava Cave, Bhairon Ghati, Gaumukh Glacier, Tapovan, and the submerged Shivalinga. Gushing sound of gorgeously flowing Bhagirathi River, scenic vistas of steep and lofty terrains, and snow-clad mountain peaks allure tourists from all across the globe who come to experience not only spirituality but also serene and tranquil ambiance.
