History of Krishna Janmbhoomi
Krishna Janmbhoomi has a long history of devotion, courage and respect around thousands of years. The temple has been destroyed and rebuilt many times, which shows the region's challenging past. The first temple was built around 5,000 years ago by Vajranabh, Krishna’s great-grandson and it has changed over time.
Ancient Times
During the Maurya and Gupta dynasties, Mathura became a major religious and cultural spot. Inscriptions and artifacts show a temple of Lord Krishna was built at that time.
Medieval Period
The temple was destroyed by various rulers. In the 11th century, Mahmud of Ghazni attacked and destroyed the Krishna Janmabhoomi Temple along with many other Hindu temples.
