Since the time of the Mughals, Chandni Chowk found in Old Delhi has been a historic market. Developed by Princess Jahanara Begum, it is still a lively area of business and culture, where one can sense the spirit of the place through its narrow lanes, food stalls, and local shops.

The history of Chandni Chowk

Chadni Chowk Bazaar was laid by Princess Jahanara Begum, who was the daughter of the Shah Jahan, in the mid-17th century. This name is derived from its principle design which resembles a crescent moon with a reflective pool. Afterward, the pool was replaced with a clock tower. Initially, the bazaar had a unique line of silver wares and the shops were arranged in the shape of a crescent. The streets were once shaded by trees, providing a kind of amenity in that special place.

Bazars, houses, and streets were constructed according to a strategic plan, which was designed by Princess Jahanara herself. With the passing of time, temples and mosques such as the Sri Digambar Jain Lal Mandir were added to it. Chandni Chowk served as the venue for Mughal processions, which were subsequently adopted by the British at Delhi Durbars.
