The Jama Mosque is a 17th-century mosque in the old part of Agra, Uttar Pradesh. It was constructed by Jahanara Begum, the eldest daughter of Shah Jahan, while he was emperor. It is one of the most famous mosques in India. The wonderful art and design of its architecture attract many visitors.

Every Friday, special prayers are held at this place, therefore, people often call it the Friday Mosque. It also includes the tomb of Salim in its compound. History of Jama Masjid Agra

The beginning of the construction- In 1637, Emperor Shah Jahan decided to build a new mosque in Agra, near Agra Fort. His daughter, Jahanara Begum, wanted to pay for it, and the emperor agreed. Around 5,000 laborers worked here.

Reasons for choosing this location- Historians believe the mosque was built near the Agra Fort for several reasons. Some people suggested the area near the river was used for living, no for religious purposes. Others think the new mosque was built to compete with the mosque near the Taj Mahal. Wayne Begley said the original location of the mosque was too far from the city.

Damage during the Indian Mutiny- In 1857, British soldiers at Agra Fort damaged the parts of the mosque, such as its main gate and eastern wall. They broke it to help their soldiers to shoot better. Explosives were also placed inside the mosque because it was near the fort.

Changes in the 19th Century- In 1875, the Tripolia Chowk, (area between Jama Masjid & Agra Fort) was demolished to construct a railway station near the fort, the area went through major changes.

• The mosque is on a high platform, and there are 35 stairs to get there. In front of the prayer hall, there is a large rectangular courtyard with a fountain in the middle.
• In front of the mosque is a rectangular prayer hall, divided into five parts and covered with three domes. The domes are decorated with inverted lotus and kalash finials.
• The courtyard and prayer hall are joined by five archways. The central arch is decorated with Persian calligraphy, and two minarets are positioned on both sides.
• Inside, the walls and ceilings are decorated with blue paint, and on the west side, a Mihrab and pulpit made of white marble, where you can relax peacefully.
