Lakshman Jhula, Rishikesh

Lakshman Jhula is one of the most famous tourist places in Rishikesh located in Uttarakhand. This wonderful bridge gives a great view of the Ganges River and the beautiful mountains. Laxman Jhula is a 450 foot long suspension bridge that once connected Pauri district to Tehri district. The bridge is special and attracts people because of its history and the mythological stories connected to it.

It is about 70 feet above the river. The surroundings of the bridge are filled with temples, ashrams, and shops selling traditional crafts. Many tourists come to meditate and take part in spiritual activities. Whether you are interested in sightseeing, photography or enjoying the scenic landscape, this bridge gives a special experience to everyone who comes.

The history of Lakshman Jhula is very popular due to several reasons-

The Origin of Lakshman Jhula - In Hindu mythology, Lakshman Jhula is connected to the Ramayana. It is believed that Lord Rama and Lakshman crossed the Ganges River using only two ropes. To honor their bravery, the Laxman Jhula Bridge was constructed.

1924 Flood and Laxman Jhula’s Destruction- In 1924, a big flood destroyed the Lakshman Jhula Bridge. The damage was severe but it was rebuilt later.

Reconstruction of the bridge- Laxman Jhula was rebuilt between 1927 to 1929 and was opened for the public in 1930. It was designed as a suspension bridge to let people cross the Ganges River safely. Later, it became a popular spot in Rishikesh for tourists and pilgrims.

• In Rishikesh, there’s another suspension bridge near Laxman Jhula called Ram Jhula. It's perfect for sightseeing and photography.
• Make sure to attend the Ganga Aarti in the evening at Triveni Ghat, which is about 11 to 12 km from Laxman Jhula. During the Aarti ceremony people light lamps to show their respect to the Ganges, making the atmosphere unforgettable with prayers and chants.
• Visitors can also explore Vashishta Gufa, a beautiful spot just a little away from Laxman Jhula, known for its spiritual and peaceful environment.
• The Neelkanth Mahadev Temple is located on a hill dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is important in Hindu mythology and is situated near Laxman Jhula.
