History

  • Ancient Period - Firozabad was once part of an ancient kingdom called Surasena. Over the years, it was ruled by many kings, including the Mauryas, Guptas, Scythians, Kushans, Indo-Greeks, and Harsha, before being ruled by Brahmin Peshwa and Rajput kings.
  • Emperor Akbar's Role- Firozabad was founded in 1566. Raja Todar Mal, returning from Gaya, passed through Asifabad, where the villagers insulted him. Emperor Akbar sent Firoz Khwaja to destroy the town and establish a new one, naming it Firozabad.
  • British Era and Beyond- Firozabad was originally in Etawah, then it shifted to Aligarh. In 1832, it became part of Sadabad district, and in 1833, it was added to the Agra district. Under British rule, the lac industry became very successful.
  • Role in Indian Independence- People of this city played an important role in India’s fight for freedom, and poet Munir Shikohabadi was sent to Kala Pani as punishment for his involvement in India's independence fight. Later, Firozabad district was established on 5 February 1989 and became a Nagar Nigam in 2015.
