Har Ki Pauri History

Sacred Footprint of Lord Vishnu-There is a big mark on the stone wall at Har Ki Pauri. It is believed to be the footprint of Lord Vishnu. It is sacred and holds great spiritual importance at this site.

Significance of Brahmakund- Brahmakund is the holiest part of this place. It is believed that during the Samudra Manthan, drops of Amrit (nectar of immortality) fell here. The bird Garuda carried the nectar and spilled some at this spot.

Expansion After 1819 Kumbh Mela- In 1819, the ghat was narrow and crowded during the Kumbh Mela. A large crowd caused a disaster, and 430 people died while trying to bathe in the Ganges. To avoid future incidents, the British government made it wider and added 60 steps for better access.

Further Developments- Hargyan Singh Katara, a Zamindar from Agra, helped expand the Ghats in 1938, and a clock tower was also constructed at that time. In 1986 the Ghats were renovated to improve the structure and allow more visitors to come.
